Make sure that you use an rental agency that is qualified, follows codes of best practice, has insurance and is a member of the Ombudsman Scheme for Lettings. The easiest way to check is to see if they are a Safe Agent member. Look for the logo.

Arla (Association of Residential Letting Agents)
Membership body for letting agents qualified in Residential Letting & Property Management as awarded by the National Federation of Property Professionals. Membership includes mandatory Money Bonded Protection Insurance to protect client's should an agency close or misappropriate funds

Membership body which is exclusively limited to rental property agents who demostrate compliance with industry codes of best practice and who have client protection insurance as well as being signed up to the Ombudsman Scheme for Lettings.

The Property Ombudsman For Lettings
The Ombudsman responsible for providing codes of best practise to letting agents which also provides a complaints handling service to landlord and tenants.
